Summary on Grant Application Form
The project covers the investigation of laser-induced gas-phase coalescence reactions to form higher carbon-based particles from fullerene derivatives as target material. Special emphasis will be laid on the mechanisms of the fullerene fusion processes and the structure elucidation of the newly generated entities. To achieve this aim, laser desorption/ionisation will be applied to fullerene derivatives of well-defined structures in order to understand the influence of a deliberately modified, spherical carbon surface in these reactions. The experiments will be performed by the use of several high-resolution tandem mass spectrometers of different design and performance.
