Summary on Grant Application Form |
The design of long-span bridges is dominated by aeroelastic effects. Any major structure of this type requires extensive wind-tunnel testing. Such tests typically reveal great sensitivity of structural response to minor detail in the aerodynamic cross-section of the deck. Many expensive physical tests are required to settle on the final, hopefully optimal, design configuration. To guide designers in the evolution of their designs, the only available mathematical tools are rather broad, semi-empirical models of structural response which are incapable of resolving fine details of the governing unsteady fluid dynamical processes (moving separation points, reattachment, etc) and are therefore incapable of aiding design revolution. Computational fluid dynamics codes fully-coupled to structural finite element analyses appear to offer the ability to resolve this. Such codes exist, and preliminary analyses already being undertaken by the applicant. However, such models require extensive verification for this application before they can be confidently used by designers. This proposal therefore seeks funding for the necessary computational resources to undertake the necessary validation, and funds (including refurbishment or existing flow visualization equipment) to allow the acquisition of detail unsteady flow data with which to compare.
