Summary on Grant Application Form |
We shall use an approach based on the Feynman path integral technique to analyse the speed of transmission of a wavepacket across a classically forbidden region. By solving the clocked Schroedinger equation, recently introduced by the proposer, we shall obtain components of the wavefuction corresponding to various durations spent by the particle in the barrier. As all components interfere to produce the transmitted part of the wavepacket, this analysis will establish the relation between the time spent in the barrier and the delay (or speed up) in the wavepacket propagation. Particular attention will be paid to the case when the crest of the wavepacket appears to be travelling at a speed exceeding the speed of light (superluminality). Semiclassical limit of the clocked Schroedinger equation and the possibility of applying a similar approach to propagation of classical electromagnetic waves will also be investigated.
