The proposed research is concerned with developing fundamental understanding of a technique involving the modification of the surface structure of ready-made fabrics by high-pressure water jets. Quantitative optical and image analysis techniques will be used to characterise the changes in surface structure produced by the jets, and the consequent effects on mechanical properties will be measured. The proposed technique is expected to provide the basis for a new generic finishing technology capable of delivering materials with novel property characteristics and surface features.
