Summary on Grant Application Form |
The project aims to determine the potential for applications of fine ferrite fibres (which are a novel form of magnetic materials) in mobile phones and other electronic equipment using microwaves. These fibres are a novel form of traditional ceramic ferrites and now need to be magnetically characterised. The project will extend a recently invented process for making ferrite fibres in order to improve product quality. We aim to identify optimum property combinations and likely application areas for microwave absorption. Secondly, the magnetic performance of the fibre in the unidirectional acrylic composites will be explored. The research assistant will gains skills in colloid chemistry, the characterisation of fibrous materials, in the preparation of thermosetting composites and making hysteresis loop measurements with a VSM. If the development is successful and the new material commercialised, then it will have a widespread impact on the design and performance of many types of electronic equipment.
