Summary on Grant Application Form |
Liquid-liquid dispersed systems are of prime importance on many industries, notably the oil industry . In order to fully underatnd the mechanisms involved during their flow in pipes and in separation a detailed knowledge of the motion of each phase is required. It is proposed to acheive this by using both endoscope viewing, coupled with laser flash illumination, and a photochromic dye tracing technique. Both techniques have been previously used at Imperial College but the new equipment will allow them to be greatly improved and applied over a wider range of velocities and dispersed phase concentrations.Matching the refractive index of the two liquids created a transparent emulsion in which the twoi phases are indistinguishavble cinec the light scattering effects, which hinder emulsion drop visualtisaiotn, have been removed. Using two photochromic dyes, one of which is introduced into each phase, the motion of the different phases can be observed. A pulsed sheet of UV laser light is introduced into the flow field at the required location giving a local slice through the dispersion. This propsal will allow simultaneous visualisation of the motion of both phases in liquid-liquid mixtures as well as the determination of the velocity and size of the dispersed elements.
