Summary on Grant Application Form |
For the last decade we have been involved in a major research program on meandering rivers with overbank flow and also two-stage channels. A large number of data sets now exist at small model scale, larger model scale and dome sparse data at field scale. The latter is changing with significant incoming data from the River Balckwater. It is now timely to consolidate the wide variety of data win preparation for publication on the World Wide Web. In parallel with this, extensive efforts have been made to produce for reliable prediction of stage/discharge for meandering over-lank flows. At least four methods are known to the applicants, each with inherent flexibility to be applied directly to natural rivers and floodplains with their varying cross-sections and roughness. It is intended also to incorporate the design method into a quasi one-dimensional numerical river model developed at the University of Glasgow which modifies the flow conveyance at each cross-section along the river reach. It is intended to produce a design guide following extensive consolation with end-user, who will assist with trials of the draft methods. This is considered to be a key aspect.
