The aim of this proposal is to purchase a state-of-the-art X-ray diffractometer for the support of the materials and condensed matter physics, drugs research and virus structure programmes in the Physics, Chemistry and Biological Sciences Departments of Warwick University. This novelly-configured multi-purpose installation, which will be the first of its type in the UK, is purchased in collaboration with AXS (Siemens), and affords rapid switching between Bragg-Brentano parafocussing geometry and Gobels mirror parallel beam optics, thus enabling an extensive range of experiments on bulk samples, thin-films and solutions, as well as conventional powder diffractometry. The package includes stages, slit assemblies and diffracted beam optics for the performance of grazing incidence studies and reflectometry as well as a diffracted-beam Ge monochromator to allow high-resolution data collection amenable to Rietveld analysis. The whole installation represents an unique multi-functional diffractometer to support the research across the science faculty with applications ranging from essential high-quality phase-identification of ceramics and assessment of thin-films for optical devices, through powder diffraction studies of contraceptive drugs, to the new prospect of ab initio phasing of virus structures via solution scattering. The equipment will be a crucial addition to our research infrastructure, replacing and much superseding the very old powder diffraction facilities presently in Physics, which are no longer commensurate with the first-class research programme extensively funded in the Warwick science departments.
