Multi-functional building facades are of current interest because of their potential to reduce the marginal costs of introducing renewable enrgy features into the built environment.They commonly comprise active photovoltaic components combined with active or passive solar thermal collection. These facades can be either opaque od semi- transparent, and in the future could be totally transparent as clear photovoltaic devices become commercially available.To date testing of such facade elements has made use of the PASSYS test clees, which are for outdoor testing only, and with limited control of key environmental factors. Future development and charactisation of such facade elements requires control of key variables that only a simulator can provide. Testing such facade components demands close control of thermal conditions, not inly as they affect the external surface (onto which the simulated solar radiation is projected), but also as they affect the back (internally facing) surface of the facade. Ingeneral these two thermal environments will differ.No facility, currently available in the UK, can approximately provide such test conditions. This proposal seeks to address this situation by constructing a new facility on the Lougborough campus, purpose built for the tesing of these new multi-functional facade elements. Testing of more conventional components (eg solar collectors, curtain wall elements) can be easilt accomodated as well.
