Summary on Grant Application Form |
Funds are required for the purchase of a plasma spectrometer and its customisation costs to allow the development and investigation of a new form of mass spectrometry. This will be a collaborative venture with VG Elemental, who specialise in plasma spectrometer systems for elemental analysis. The new system will be based on prototype experiments already conducted at Swansea using a Fast Flow Glow Discharge Source. It has the capability to inject gases into the immediate afterglow of the plasma without interfering with the main discharge. this has been observed to quench unwanted ionisation processes whilst positively promoting the desired analyte ionisation. The project will explore the analytical potential of this promising new approach not only towards elemental analysis of solids, but also solutions and difficult organic samples. The technique discriminates against ionisation products by electron impact or ion-molecule reaction. It will therefore also explore the mechanisms of ionisation in the plasma by studying the reactions of very high excited states of discharge gas atoms. This also has relevance to the widely used Inductively Coupled Plasma. The excited state chemistry of species generated in the ICP will also be studied by the Afterglow Gas Assisted approach.
