Summary on Grant Application Form |
A basic nanoindentation facility will be established at Leeds, located in the Department of Materials, and operated jointly by the Departments of Materials and Mechanical Engineering. The facility will be available to all Departments of the University, as well as to other University and industrial users, though it is anticipated that the most use will be made by these two Departments. The nanoindentation facility will have two primary functions: firstly it will have immediate and important applicability to current research programmes in the Departments of Materials and Mechanical Engineering concerning the surface properties and wear of hard materials of a wide range of types, and yield information essential to a full understanding of surface damage and wear mechanisms; secondly, it will readily allow probing experiments to be carried out in new areas to provide the preliminary understanding on which basis research programmes can be defined and developed.
