Summary on Grant Application Form
This is a proposal to provide a first equipping for the academic partner in the recently-announced 3D-MATIC Faraday Partnership. The academic partner (The University of Glasgow) will be hosting a number of projects funded by EPSRC, SHEFC, the European Union and other, mostly commercial, sources under the Partnership umbrella (all these projects will come under the same operational board) and this first equipping is intended to provide crucial supporting infrastructure for these projects. Many of the first round of projects will be in the area of digital media technology or in pre-competitive research leading to applications in this area, so require high-performance 3D workstations capable of handling images with the resolution and dynamic range obtainable from 35mm filmstock. Subsequent work will increasingly focus on medical applications also require high resolution and dynamic range, equivalent to, or even exceeding, 35mm film. The equipment requested consists of six Intergraph 3D-accelerated workstations with the resources to make efficient 100Mb/sec links to a high-performance video-standard server separately provided for REVELATION. This will help support the outreach component of our Partnership with NFTS/CREATEC in both remote teaching at Glasgow from NFTS and project work with CREATEC mediated remotely over a REVELATION-supported network.
