Summary on Grant Application Form |
The Fluid Dynamics and Thermodynamics Division of the Cambridge University Engineering Department has a history of innovative work using experimental, theoretical and numerical methods. The lack of an essential peice of instrumentation, namely a laser anemometer, threatens the continuation of this research. The need is greatest for experimental research but it is important also for CFD. It is proposed to purchase a one dimensional Laser Doppler Anemometer. This will be capable of expansion to two and three dimensional measurments at a later time.LDA offers several advantages over conventional probe systems. It is non intrusive which is very important in regions of separating flows such as in compressors or behind high life airfoils. The measuring volume is very small so that measurements of surface velocities can be made close to surfaces in small scale experiments such as in the leading edge separation bubbles of high speed airfoils. LDA also allows measurements to be made inside moving components such as turbomachine rotor blades. The measurement of velocity is independaent of the density or temperature of the flow which is particularly important in turbomachinery, and combustion and flame research. It is planned to apply the LDA system to the above research problems.
