Summary on Grant Application Form
To establish a dedicated instrument for the new technique of Crystal Orientation Microscopy which will enable the automated analysis of large numbers of electron backscatter patterns to be performed and to obtain statistically significant measurements of mesotexture and macrotexture. The instrumental development and application is a joint venture between Oxford Instruments plc and the University. The instrument will be used to further develop the technique, and to apply it to a range of materials problems which are of both scientific and technological importance. All of the programmes are listed in the Foresight initiative. These studies will include: The structure of processed of High Temperature Superconductors, Grain boundary structures of Titanium based alloys: Texture analysis and sheet metal forming in commercial alloys: Studies in Surface Engineering: Electro-chemical plating: The orientation structures of processed rare-earth permanent magnets: Cleavage failure in structural steels: Hydride cracking in Zircaloy: Short-crack fatigue crack growth: Grain optimisation during joining processes.
