Summary on Grant Application Form |
The School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering has been using a clean room for about 20 years. This room was self-build and has served the school well. However, the facilities are now out of date, unserviceable and do not produce the components required for modern research. The School has therefore decided to invest in a new state-of-the-art facility. The clean room will be a class 10,000 room with an area of 70m. The equipment in the clean room will be new except for two sputter coaters. The new clean room will be used for a number of projects these can be generically classified under the title 'high performance miniature microwave devices for communications'. This includes a number of currently active areas of research in the school as well as planned future work. Currently the work in the school includes the development of new passive devices based on thin film materials this includes superconductors, ferroelectrics and dielectrics. Pattering of multilayer structures as well as micro machining is necessary for this work. Active devices are also important and current work includes active antennas and some fundamental work on electron transport in semiconductors.
