Summary on Grant Application Form
The goal of this research is to investigate and evaluate new methods for the design of asynchronous processors and their system software. Work funded by EPSRC grant GR/J62708 is investigating self-timed logic and has achieved a new architecture for self-timed processors, new circuit techniques for their implementation and new computer-aided design tools to support the methodology. We now want to carry this forward by evaluating the new techniques on more substantial processor designs and to broaden the investigation into the associated CAD tools for simulation and synthesis of self-timed architectures, together with new compiler technology. In particular, we want to explore designs for microcontrollers which exhibit the challenges of general processor design but are sufficiently simple to be tackled in a small project.
