Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim of this proposal is to carry out basic research into microscopic structure - macroscopic property correlations in liquid crystal systems. Specific objectives are 1. To understand the Order and Structure in thermotropic phases.2. To develop a new understanding of functional chiral and achiral Smectic phases.3. To understand and develop the uses of lyotropic mesogens and 4. To extend studies of nanostructural metals, metal oxides and organic polymers synthesised in different liquid crystalline phases. This basic research will underpin applied research into Twisted Nematic, Supertwisted Nematic, Ferroelectric and Antiferroelectric Devices and Displays, the development of Anti-cancer and Anti-viral biological functionality and new Catalytic processes. The application comes from the newly formed Southampton Liquid Crystal Institute which combines the liquid crystal research activities of the Departments of Physics and Astronomy, Chemistry and Applied Mathematics. The key experimental techniques to be used include Optical and Scanning Probe microscopies, UV-visible, I.R., Raman and Photon Correlation Spectroscopies, Linear and Non Linear Electro- and Opto-Optics, TEM, Dielectric Relaxation, NMR and ESR Spectroscopies, DSC and Computer Modelling. The request, herein is for an X-ray Diffractometer to enable us to carry out the microstructured analysis and to provide a service to the Institute, the University and Industry.
