Summary on Grant Application Form
Porosity is one of the main limitations on the mechanical properties of as cast parts. Recent work has shown that porosity formed during solidification is a nucleation and diffusion controlled process, and hence may be modelled via coupled stochastic-continuum methods. Coupling of such a mesoscopic model into a process model is computationally expensive, hence this study aims to both improve this type of model, and to develop new models sufficiently efficient to be used industrially. Such models will predict the quantity, distribution and morphology of the porosity, alloying a direct correlation to the final mechanical properties of the as cast parts. To validate these models a strong experimental programme is required to both determine the material properties used in the meso-mode. The proposed research team has the expertise, in both multi-scale computer modelling and material property characterisation, to achieve the goals of the program and the industrial contacts to validate and disseminate the information for immediate application.
