Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal requests funding for equipment to set up a Centre for Supercritical Coating Technologies at the University of Surrey. Ruinning costs and an intials reserach project will be funded by an industrial consortium, whose members will have partial access to the equipment. This will be an unique facility within UK academia which will be beneficial to different disciplines, including chemistry, physics and chemical and process engineering, as well as several institutions. It will permit development of clean processing technologies applicable to a wide variety of end-uses and shhould spawn a range of research projects, funded by EPSRC, the EC and industry, on the fundamental underpinning science as well as more applied aspects. The equipment requested consists of a supercritical spray coating apparatus and associated spray nozzles etc. plus a rheometer for characterisation of initial coating systems and cure rheology. The Industrial contribution will be 38% inkind though Union Carbide making the equipment available at a markedly reduced price. Planned research projects will study the parameters affecting coating formation and quality, including temperature, pressure, coating chemistry and rheology. A variety of coating systems will be studies in conjunction with different substrates.
