Summary on Grant Application Form
Currently within the Centre of Communications Research at Bristol University, the development of new systems is limited by the quality of sub-systems and scale of components or components arrays that can be constructed. It is proposed therefore that two substantial advances are made in the Centre's facilities namely; (i) that the existing ion beam etching facility developed jointly by the Centre of Communications Research and the Interface Analysis Centre at Bristol be enhanced so that much larger scale components can be constructed without sacrificing resolution for the first time, and (ii) that high performance microwave and motherboard fabrication facilities can be provided, allowing us to test sub-system and system ideas in a much more flexible and innovative manner. The main internal focus of research will concern three related interdisciplinary projects which will involve both the microwave and optical activities within the Centre namely; (i) the development of high performance optical packet and cell networks using new forms of microwave carrier or sub-carrier routing (ii) the development of high power optical feeds for mobile communication transmitters, and (iii) the development of new adaptive antenna systems using the high power feeds studied in objective (ii). These projects have benefited from initial studies and advances during the last year, and will be carried out in close collaboration with industrial organisations. As the research requires that tight operating performance levels must be achieved in the constructed sub-systems, new equipment including a tuneable laser, and microwave test bed and source will be donated to allow full characterisation.
