Summary on Grant Application Form |
The project is involved with the development of a novel manufacturing process (high speed machining) for the manufacturer of aerospace components, specifically turbine blades in Inconel 718 (nickel based superalloy). It will involve the evaluation of cutting mechanisms and tool wear phenomena, together with operating parameters - cutting/rotational speed, depth of cut, fed rate, etc. work will include the measurement of cutting forces and tool/workpeice interface temperatures using a variety of evaluation techniques (implanted thermocouple, chip/tool thermocouple and infrared). Tool wear data will be augmented with SEM analysis, solution couples and 3D topographical mapping. Statistically designed trials will be undertaken. Key elements of the work will be: establishment of workpeice surface integrity effects as a consequence of HSM operation with comparisons made with existing production processes; and modelling of the HSM process using finite element methods. Component manufacture will entail evaluation of complex cutter path strategies in terms of minimum production times/longest tool life/best surface integrity.
