Summary on Grant Application Form |
The project is concerned with video data compression, an increasingly important area of research given the rapid development of multimedia systems and the limited bandwidth of existing communication networks. The aim is to develop a robust and general model-based coding method which can deliver acceptable quality at very low bit rates. The approach is based on estimating the parameters of a 3D dynamic model of the scene. This is in common with many current approaches to the problem because only be exploiting the underlying 3D geometry of dynamic scenes can the low bit rates required for many applications be achieved. Moreover, the resulting 3D description which underlies the code for the video sequence will then provide an ideal basis for many of the envisaged multimedia application for compressed video streams, such as video editing, merging video with graphics, creation of special effects, etc. The significance of the approach is recognised in both the academic and industrial sectors and is reflected in the current object-based framework being considered for the MPEG-4 standard.
