Summary on Grant Application Form
This project will address experimentally and theoretically the problems associated with backwashing, linking properties of the feed solutions and the filtration and backwashing operating parameters to the effectiveness of the backwash. The proposed experimental work consists of a filtration followed by a backwash, enabling backwash performance to be related to both filtration operating conditions and feed solution properties. The proposed theoretical work is aimed at acquiring a working continuum model of the evolving filter cake properties including its heterogeneity and its eventual break-up, as well as making a physically realistic model of particle-septum adhesive properties. Understanding and controlling cleaning reagents, their concentrations, the operating pressure and temperature, and flow rates can determine the lifetime and performance of the membrane.
