Summary on Grant Application Form |
We request funding for a multi-processor computing facility to enable us to undertake a programme of research aimed at understanding technologically and scientifically important properties of liquid crystals. We will use modelling techniques from both engineering mathematics and molecular physics to model large-scale structure and dynamics of liquid crystal defects and interfaces, where large gradients of liquid crystalline order occur, and for which the traditional approaches fail. The key features of the computing infrastructure which would be provided under this grant are power, flexibility and capability for enhancement. Molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo techniques, which run in parallel on several processors simultaneously, will be used to obtain detailed information about structure and dynamics, while coarse-grained modelling techniques (finite element, simulated annealing) will be applied to Ossen-Frank, Landau-de-Gennes, Landau-Ginzburg, and density-functional models. The testing, validation, and improvement of the latter techniques will allow us to faithfully represent aspects of liquid crystalline behaviour on both large and small length and time-scales.
