Summary on Grant Application Form
Advances in laser, filter and detector technology now make it possible to obtain Raman spectra from organic films 1nm thick. We propose to purchase a confocal Raman spectrometer to study thin films of fluid lubricants under pressure and shear. The Raman spectrometer will employ a 2W frequency-doubled diode-pumped Nd:YAG source and a total internal reflection geometry to enhance signal levels. These experiments will reveal whether phase transitions and oriental ordering occur in molecular liquids in tribological contacts. The system will have sufficient time resolution to study relaxation processes occurring on the time-scale of seconds. The Raman spectrometer will be available to other specified users in the Chemistry, Materials and Engineering departments for the study of microelectrodes, nanocomposites and thin films.
