Summary on Grant Application Form |
This proposal concerns the development of strategies for the organisation of design information for aerospace products, and of computer systems for its storage and delivery. Well managed engineering design information is vital to sustaining competitive advantage in engineering, but the retention of knowledge gained and lessons learned during product design and development is often difficult because of the relatively unstructured and informal nature of much design information. This project will therefore firstly develop approaches for the automated or semi-automated indexing of design project and engineering information attributes and indexing terms that will be developed in the project. Secondly, techniques will be developed to add structure to the relatively informal design information, based on an understanding of its engineering context, to aid in its organisation and subsequent retrieval. Prototype information systems will be constructed using multimedia database and Internet technologies.
