The UK construction industry operates world-wide and will be benefited significantly by the centrifuge earthquake modelling capability at Cambridge University. A Mark-I Stored Angular Momentum (SAM) earthquake actuator was developed at Cambridge and was tested on Cambridge Centrifuge. The initial experiments verified the principle of SAM actuator but revealed some short comings. The main aim of this proposal is to develop the SAM actuator to its full design capability.The Mark-I SAM actuator was also tested on the US army WES centrifuge in an independent swinging platform. The success of the SAM actuator in this configuration allows us to develop a similar self-contained swinging platform at Cambridge at a relatively low cost. An improved face plate with wear resistant materials will be built to translate the reciprocating motion from the SAM actuator into the lateral shaking of the centrifuge model. A new high gravity three phase motor and inverter will be produced to enhance the working envelope of the SAM. Improvements to the present data acquisition system are also proposed.
