This research programme concerns the development of a 3D-surface inspection system based on a novel interferometric instrument using birefringent optical components. Previously a single-element birefringent lens has been used to record height information associated with a single point. In our work we will design a multi-element birefringent lens made from a mixture of different birefringent materials, giving a large field of view. This will allow the entire surface to be inspected in parallel. The depth associated with each picture element will be inferred from a novel algorithm applied to a simultaneous measurement of the Stokes polarisation parameters. The latter algorithm overcomes ambiguities associated with a fringe-counting techniques and differences in surface reflectivity. As such it will be applicable to a range of interferomatic-type instruments.
