The current industrial practice is to use large-scale finite element models for vehicle brake design and refinement. The problem is that this approach provides only a partial solution to brake noise, because many of the dynamic instabilties that give rise to noise are induced by parametric effects and discontinuous nonlinearities. The approach taken in this project will be to produce small-scale mathematical models which will be validated experimentally. For the parametric analysis (squeal noise, 2-15kHz) it will be necessary to include the first several modes of the disc with perhaps six modes of the pads and caliper. Component mode synthesis and model truncation will be used to reduce the model to around 12 degrees-of-freedom.Different small-scale models will be constructed for chaos studies in the squeal-noise and brake-groan (200-500Hz) frequency ranges. Stick-slip and pad-disc contact nonlinearities will be included. The size of the chaos models is a moot point , which will be determined by conventional methods such as the correlation dimension. The programme includes a significant test and validation phase. A validated model will be applied to a brake system with known noise problems and a modified brake will be built and tested by Lucas Varity.
