Summary on Grant Application Form
This research will provide a detailed study of the mechanisms of spallation of the outer ceramic layer in the thermal barrier coating systems. Thermobalances will be used to assess the spallation behaviour as a function of the thickness of the naturally-grown oxide layer on the bond coat and also with the surface topography of the bond coat. A systematic variation during coating manufacture. To complement this experimental study, finite-element analyses will be undertaken of interfacial wedge crack growth. These predictions of spallation will be validated with the appropriate experimental data. An important aspect of the project will be close and frequent interaction with the industrial collaborators. The intention is to ensure rapid transfer of information into their in-house lifting methods and also into their manufacturing quality control procedures.
