Summary on Grant Application Form |
Recent developments in ultrafast pulse generation and electrooptics have made the terahertz frequency range of the electromagnetic spectrum (0-5 THz, 0-150 cm-1) accessible. In this range, polar gases, polymers and solvents absorb strongly, which allows the imaging of certain specific compounds in composite materials and biological objects. THz or T-ray imaging has up to now been hampered by poor resolution as the typical centre wavelength is on the order of a millimetre. We propose a novel scheme of T-ray near-field imaging, which overcomes these resolution problems. In our scheme we should be able to achieve lambda/2000 resolution (0.4mu) in the near-field, which will make T-ray imaging a truly powerful technique for non-destructive testing.
