Summary on Grant Application Form
The power requirements of a 70 seat rail vehicle operating under typical and worst case conditions will be identified through computer modelling. The model will be validated by comparison with results from tests on an existing 20 sear vehicle. A range of combinations will be investigated with the aim of total life cycle cost minimistion.Once the most cost effective combination had been identified, it will be subject to laboratory testing at UWE prior to installation in the vehicle by the lead partners, PPM Ltd. The laboratory tests will comprise a power and energy audit under simulated operating conditions and test of the transmission control system.Following installation I the vehicle, performance test will be carried out under real operating conditions so as to include vehicle dynamics and this complete the audit. The results of the test will be used to refine the model, which will then be used to investigate cost effective drive cycle procedures. The model will be available at the end of the project for further generic hybrid vehicle design.
