Summary on Grant Application Form |
This project aims to develop hardware and software to test the hypothesis that data recorded from a novel array of surface electrodes may be used as an alternative to that from needle electrodes for clinical diagnostic purposes. If successful this technique will decrease the discomfort and risk of infection and injury to patients, and enable quantitative EMG techniques o be used more widely.A 32 channel monopolar recording system will e designed and built. The electrode array will plug directly into the from-end electronics thus enabling different geometry electrode arrays to be interchanged and cable effects to be minimised.Finite element modelling will be used to determine the effects of local anatomy on the EMG signals, this indicating the main features that need to be taken into account. Software will be developed to decompose individual MUP's, average the incoming data, and estimate the source depth from temporal dispersion. Source width and MUP parameters can then be determined. Finally, the results obtained will be validated using data from normal subjects and a pilot study carried out on patient groups such as Motor Neurone Disease to assess the clinical value of the technique.
