Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposal is to support research for two international collaborative projects, principally one designated TWA20 by VAMAS, whose purpose is to support trade in high technology products by providing the technical basis for drafting codes of practice and specifications for advanced materials, and a related European project RESTAND. TWA20 embraces the fundamental science and technology which is required for drafting a standard for the measurement of residual stresses by neutron diffraction. RESTAND is concerned with demonstrating that the procedures developed can be applied to practical components of relevance to European Industry. Measurements will be made principally at AECL, ILL and ISIS, on four specially selected samples representative of (a) internal and (b) through-surface stress fields, (c) in composite materials and (d) in a weldment. The results will be compared with those obtained at other laboratories. Protocols will be developed for experimental procedures, materials charaterization, error determination and strain to stress conversion so that a standard can be produced to provide industry with the confidence to exploit the neutron technique. It is envisaged that it will be of assistance in selecting fabrication methods, validating numerical analysis procedures to predict residual stresses, and in determining the influence of residual stress on component performance.
