Summary on Grant Application Form
The decomposition of organic matter during the firing process provides the porosity within the fire-brick matrix upon which the insulating properties depend. It is important, both from the manufacturing viewpoint and the environmental viewpoint to have a clear understanding of the pyrolisis process involved. Novel microwave technology, developed in the context of coal science, will be used to ascertain these facts. In addition, microwave heating will be evaluated as a means of firing the bricks. A second objective will be to develop quantitative and qualitative methods of analysis for inorganic materials in the presence of organic additives (e.g. as in paper industry waste).
