Summary on Grant Application Form
Whilst the durability and shape of waste tyres pose great problems to their land disposal, these are positive advantages which could be exploited in marine construction projects. In spite of their widespread use around the world (e.g. breakwaters and fishing reefs) there is minimal evidence concerning their environmental impact in the sea. This project aims to assess this impact through biological and chemical studies in the laboratory and the field producing the evidence required by UK licensing authorities before it will consider the use of waste tyres in marine construction projects. The nature of leachates from tyres, effect on growth and bioaccumulation by marine organisms will be assessed. Environmental impact of marine utilisation will be compared with existing terrestrial disposal options.
