Faster casting and thin-slab continuous casting leads to higher productivity and a reduction of rolling costs, respectively, and their adoption in UK steel making is inevitable. However, both developments will result in more rigorous operating conditions in the continuous casting mould with subsequent deterioration of surface quality of the product. The mould flux plays an important role in continuous casting since it lubricates the steel shell and provides the optimum heat transfer. This proposal outlines a research programme to optimise the performances of candidate mould fluxes casting: (1) the development of a laboratory test to measure the melting rates of these powders since it is very important to maintain liquid lubrication at high casting speed;(2) the characterisation of candidate mould powders, through measurements of viscosity, and solidification temperature;(3) investigation of the horizontal heat transfer across the slag film formed between the steel shell and the mould through development of a simulation test;(4) measurements of the metal/slag interfacial tension, which is an important factor in slag entrapment, a major source of inclusions; (5) measurement of fluoride emission (health hazard, plant corrosion); (6) erosion of refractories used in submerged entry nozzles.
