Most statistical methods make tacit randomness assumptions about the way the data were generated (e.g. random sampling of cases, random allocation of treatments to experimental units). In controlled situations their validity is guaranteed by the design used in the study. But for observational data, or when uncontrolled departures from the intended design occur due to a variety of practical difficulties, the validity of randomness (or exchangeability) assumptions is open to question. This project aims to devise practically useful methods of assessing the sensitivity of statistical conclusions to departures from such randomness assumptions.The project follows up the recent RSS paper by the applicant and co-worker (Copas and Li). This paper explored a general method for embedding a statistical model within a broader model allowing for different levels of selectivity in the sampling or allocation mechanism, and applied it to some textbook examples. We propose to study a much wider class of applications covering the techniques most often used in applied statistics, including survival models and generalised linear models. The development will include a new asymptotic theory for assessing sensitivity to small departures from randomness. The ideas will be tested out on a number of practical case studies.
