The work utilises proton nuclear magnetic resonance relaxation measurements to investigate molecular structure and dynamics. In particular, it is concerned with the development of both pulse sequences to make relaxation measurements reliably and methods to analyse the resulting data. There are problems associated with both the measurement and use of proton relaxation measurements:(i) Cross relaxation, which inter converts species, makes it difficult to accurately quantify any particular process.(ii) While relaxation rates depend upon internuclear distances, angles and the dynamics of a molecule, much of this information usually remains inaccessible due to the complexity of the processes contributing and difficulty in quantifying them. While the comparison of two NOEs to determine the ratio of two interneclear distances can be straight forward, this is not the case for extracting geometrical information from other categories of relaxation rate or the investigation of molecular dynamics.The work proposed here will tackle both of these problems thus increasing the accuracy with which internuclear distances and angles can be determined and enabling dynamic information to be obtained from proton relaxation measurements.
