Summary on Grant Application Form
Results from simulations suggest that the ubiquitous biaxial nematic phase can be induced in mixtures of rod- and disk-like particles where the two types of particle can interact via a hydrogen-bonding interaction. In this application, we propose the synthesis of rod- and disk-like metal complexes derived from the same ligand framework (to suppress phase separation) in which intermolecular Lewis acid/base interactions are built in through the choice of the metal fragment to mimic the hydrogen-bonded interactions in the simulation. Careful mixture studies are proposed to perform an initial evaluation of the mixtures, followed by NMR experiments on selectively deuterated materials.
