Summary on Grant Application Form
We have identified a series of phthalocyanine complexes and porphyrins which show a gas-sensitive (chlorine) optical absorption at low concentration (<10ppm) and a fast response (<20s for saturation) in thin film form. These films show a greater than tenfold selectivity to chlorine in relation to HC1 and NO2 and in most cases recover fully to their original optical state, so fulfilling the main requirements of a re-useable gas sensor. This programme will concentrate on the maximisation of the chlorine gas sensitivity of the optical properties of self-assembled, LB, evaporated and spun-coated films using in-situ uv-visible spectroscopy, surface plasmon resonance and fibre optic overlay sensing. The recovery of the initial optical signal after exposure to the test gas will be studied in detail during multiple exposures to chlorine in the range 0-10ppm. Furthermore, the specific chlorine gas sensing capability of our materials will be optimised in relation to other gases such as NO2, SO2 and HC1
