This research aims to contribute to the effective engineering of coastal and fluvial flood defense projects by improving society's knowledge of how coarse sediment moves along coast and through rivers. Globally and nationally, sediment transport processes incur substantial economic expenditure in terms of river and coastal maintenance. Understanding how gravel/shingle is transported is therefore fundamental to the sustainable management of river and coastal environments. Specifically, improvements I the understanding of sediment transport processes are vital to the reliable prediction of sediment transport rates. This research aims to provide data on the movement of gravel/shingle particles during tidal and flood events for use in numerical model validation. This will be achieved via a multi-disciplinary team of research scientists, electronics engineers, instrument manufacturers and end-users working together to develop new particle tracing technologies. At the same time, the combination of expertise from coastal and fluvial research and end-user communities will facilitate valuable technology and skills transfer between members. The research would have a wide scientific impact and provide datasets for the international scientific community. The project represents an ideal vehicle for postgraduate and technician training in sediment transport monitoring and modelling, providing people with the skills to meet the practical challenges of coastal and fluvial management.
