Visible wavelength semiconductor laser diodes will be developed with high quality output beams and high output powers. Four laser classes will be investigated. A surface grating 650 nm DBR laser will be fabricated to establish the base technology. The grating section, formed by dry etching, will have undergone quantum well intermixing, thus ensuring low losses in this section. Three section tuneable DBR lasers will then be investigated which include a gain section, a phase control section and a grating, the latter two sections being intermixed in order to reduce waveguide losses. Q-switched lasers will be fabricated and assessed. Initially a simple two-section device, gain section and saturable absorber will be investigated, but later, in order to reduce catastrophic facet damage, non absorbing mirrors will be integrated into the cavity. Array waveguide lasers will be developed if necessary to meet the target power (50mW, high quality beam). Finally a high power (+100mW) angled grating DBR laser will be fabricated. When good quality material becomes available these technologies will be demonstrated at 635nm. Optical studies of the gratings and detailed measurements of the gain spectra of quantum wells will be carried out ensuring a clear understanding of the device physics.
