Summary on Grant Application Form |
This application is for funding to upgrade and manage the computer network of the Condensed matter theory group at the Blackett laboratory. Our current grant, which was solely for maintenance and management of existing equipment, expires in December 1997. Our last major upgrade was in January 1992. The work we do is highly computational and a major upgrade to our computer system is now essential to the continued viability and international competitive of our work. Our research covers a wide range of topics in condensed matter and materials physics, but our common aim is to bring theory and experiment closer together by applying computational techniques in an original and imaginative way. Current interests include: computer design of new materials for optoelectronic and microwave applications; simulation of fundamental structural and electronic properties of materials; simulation of the growth of materials by molecular beam epitaxy; computation of transport properties and charge dynamics of novel electronic systems; computer design of microstuctured materials with novel electromagnetic properties; simulation of the development of complexity in simple dynamical systems. The codes and techniques we use were almost all developed within the group, but many are now being used all over the world in industry and universities.
