Summary on Grant Application Form |
The materials of interest to us are NdFeB alloys of varying composition and containing small amounts of critical additives. The material will be processed by the HDDR route. Our aim is to produce material with higher values of (BH) max in an efficient, cost-effective manner. A main thrust of the project will be to refine the grain structure from its current value ~300nm to a value ~100nm or smaller. For isotropic and anisotropic powders grain refinement should improve both intrinsic coercivity and hot workability. To achieve our aims, an understanding of what is happening at the microscopic level is essential and we shall develop and apply both novel and conventional transmission electron microscopic techniques. More specifically, we shall undertake as full a characterisation as possible of the physical and magnetic microstructures of our materials at key stages throughout the processing route. Further insight will be gained through modelling the development of the microstructure and through micromagnetic modelling. The work will be in collaboration with two UK companies, Rare Earth Products at Widnes and Magnet Applications at Berkhamstead.
