Summary on Grant Application Form
A large amount of the Industrial effluent and waste produced in the UK is in the form of metal salts in aqueous solutions formed, for example, by acid base neutralization. This represents a major loss of resources in the form of acids, bases, slats and water and also presents a pollution hazard. The proposed research therefore aims to investigate the performance of an intensified ion-exchange membrane module suing cross corrugated membranes for efficient recovery of salts and water re-use.It is expected that the enhanced mass transfer rates than can be achieved by using a cross corrugated flow arrangement will result in improves recovery efficiency whilst research will be carried out by two collaborating bodies - Newcastle University and University of Exeter. The industrial partners will be W. Gore and Associates, Solvay and FuMA-Tech GmbH.
