Summary on Grant Application Form |
Aluminium recovery plants recycle process scrap, dross (smelting by-products) and scrap aluminium for re-use as manufacturing stock materials. This has significant benefits for both industry and the environment. However, this recycling process is sill not well understood, an most facilities are run on a trial and error basis. This project will characterise the process by measuring and adjusting the inputs and monitoring the outputs and conditions under which he process is running (temperatures, gases released, etc.) As characteristics are developed these will be incorporated into a database and the application of gradient based optimisation techniques will be investigated to optimise the process in terms of product quality, cost effectiveness and environmental impact. The techniques developed within this research project will have generic application to other manufacturing processes and waste recycling facilities.
