Summary on Grant Application Form |
Within the project, interest is centred upon interaction with virtual humans in immersive design environments using peripheral devices such as data suits and magnetic sensors, which allow human body movements to be sensed in real-time. Integrating virtual humans with virtual prototypes has manifold advantages that include a reduction of product development times, reduction of industrial injuries, increase in product buildability, increase in competitiveness, and enhancement of training. The project's investigations will be conducted using a series of iterative, behavioural studies, that use a range of different interfaces, algorithms and different VE system characteristics to investigate five, generic industrial case studies that are representative of some ergonomic design problems in manufacturing industry. The project represents the convergence in the research interests of two university investigators in cognitive modelling, human factors aspects of VEs and virtual manufacturing, and three industrial partners with complementary expertise in human modelling and virtual manufacturing. The work will impact on methods of integrating cognitive engineering and ergonomic considerations within the context of current, concurrent engineering techniques.
