Summary on Grant Application Form |
This proposes a new fundamental study of dynamic wetting and air entrainment in the most common coating flows, roll coating, foward, reverse and gravure, where hydrodynamic effects are important and could assist wetting. Flow visualisation and image analysis will be used to measure the dynamic wetting line location and contact angle and the critical conditions leading to wetting failure and air entrainment for a range of hydrodynamic and inlet flow conditions, with Newtonian and non-Newtonian model fluids. The data will enable the development of new correlations to predict the air entrainment coating speed and the operating and design conditions which will maximise it. They will allow the formulation of new, born out of experiments, boundary conditions of the dynamic wetting region which are fundamental to the modelling of roll coating flows. Such experimental data will also improve our understanding of the phenomena of dynamic wetting in flow situations where hydrodynamic effects are prominent.
