A joint programme between groups at Leicester University and Cambridge University is proposed. Using established strengths and facilities this economical programme ains to make very substantial progress in the prediction ao wake interaction effect in turbo machines. The work has now reached a stage where a shared programme, using wind tunnel capabilities at Leicester and turbomachinery rig facilities at the Whittle Laboratory, with attendant computational capabilities, should result in a significant breakthrough.Wake and potential interaction effects govern aerodynamic behaviour through their impact on boundary layer transition and separation. The goal of this work lies in developing more accurate flow predictions for axial turbomachine blades, particularly off-design conditions and at low Reynolds numbers where laminar separation bubbles are prevalent. The information gained will be incorporated into both steady and unsteady boundary layer calculation methods and other computational codes useful for turbomachine blade design. The outcome will be an understanding and predictive capability which should be of value to designers addressing the isses of cost and weight without prejudicing fuel consumption. It should particularly assist in further improving the efficiency of propulsion and energy-conversion devices based on turbomachinery.
